Le Cassoulet

5 Romilly Crescent Canton CARDIFF Wales CF1 9NP Telephone: 2022 1905 Facsimile: 2022 1905

Description

There's a modern feel to this popular, long-standing bistro. The cooking specialises in robust French provincial classics, notably from south-west France, such as cassoulet toulousain, duck confit, lamb shank cooked in straw, and foie gras. The proprietor has his roots firmly proclaimed in the photos of the Toulouse rugby team, and by his wine list, of which many choices are brought over specially by the restaurant. Note that house champagne by the glass is a bargain. We enjoyed diced vegetables in courgette mousse wrapped and steamed in cabbage leaf, duck leg stuffed with chicken mousseline and served with wild mushrooms and baby onions, and fruits with champagne sabayon for dessert.

Le Gallois

6-8 Romilly Crescent CARDIFF Wales CF11 9NR Telephone: 2034 1264 Facsimile: 2023 7911

Email: le.gallois@virgin.net

Description

'A sparkling addition to the Welsh capital's eating scene', enthused one inspector of this edge of city restaurant. The name may emphasise the French connections of the owners, but a glance at the menu reveals influences closer to home. Chef/patron Padrig Jones has served his apprenticeship in some high profile kitchens and the influence of Marco Pierre White is clearly discernible in such offerings as ribeye steak with barnaise and pommes frites. As might be hoped, it is depth of flavour and uncompromising choice of produce that shines through. Meats are top notch, the power of the aforementioned beef matched by 'knockout' rump of salt marsh lamb delivered with fondant potatoes and grilled proven×ale vegetables. Fish too is carefully procured and steamed sea bass with crab, rocket and a chilli salsa was judged a beautifully balanced combination.

Winner of the AA Restaurant of the Year Award for Wales.
